Youth star Coyle leaves Gunners
Winger who played for Camden and Islington schools teams joins Swiss side

THE dream of “one of our own” breaking into the Arsenal first-team was shattered this week when Camden-born winger Trae Coyle left the club.
The 20-year-old, who grew up in Chalk Farm and used to attend Gospel Oak Primary School, has signed for Swiss Super League side FC Lausanne-Sport in a permanent long-term move.
Trae joined the Gunners just before his ninth birthday and progressed through the club’s youth development ranks to eventually star in their Under-23s side.
Among the highlights during his time with the north Londoners was in 2018/19 when he scored eight goals and chalked up six assists in just 14 appearances to help Arsenal win the Under-18s Premier League South title.
Trae signed his first professional contract with the Gunners in January 2018, celebrating the news by posting two words on social media: “Childhood dream.” But he never forgot the grassroots game and still found time to regularly star for both Camden and Islington schools teams.
In 2012 he helped Camden end a 17-year wait for silverware when he scored a hat-trick in the final of the Kay Trophy to secure a 3-2 win over Bermondsey.
And in 2015, having moved to St Aloysius School, he was a key part of the Islington team that won a silver medal at the London Youth Games.
Trae made his non-competitive first-team debut for Arsenal in a friendly match against Brentford at the Emirates Stadium last June, just before the resumption of the 2019/20 season.
He then spent the first half of last season on loan at League One side Gillingham, where he scored two goals in 13 appearances before returning to Arsenal in January.
A club statement read: “Everyone at the club wishes Trae all the best in the next stage of his career in Lausanne, and we thank him for his contribution to Arsenal.”
Meanwhile, it doesn’t look like Trae will be the only player to leave Arsenal this summer without being given a chance in the first-team.
There are growing reports that French defender William Saliba is currently “assessing his options” having failed to play a competitive game for the club since joining from Saint-Etienne two years ago.
The £25million signing spent the second half of last season on loan at Nice, and with Arsenal said to be readying an improved offer for Brighton and Hove Albion defender Ben White, Saliba’s days at the Emirates Stadium could be over without hardly ever kicking a ball.
