The ill-fated Marble Arch Mound which many remember as a failed project
• WITH reference to Jim Hill’s letter, about the Connaught Street Village Green project, I am writing to sincerely support the making of Kendal Street one-way, if not shut it completely (A village green… the way forward, March 8).
Crossing at the junction with Connaught Street is not only terribly difficult, and it is also ugly here.
As Jim Hill says, of course the shops need footfall, and not traffic rushing through to Paddington station. This lovely scheme should help with that.
Considering how the former council Conservatives wasted so much of our money on their mound project – which was of no value to anyone – it is horrible to think that they are trying to scupper this local project.
Public seating is in short supply, and we need a place to sit and rest and chat. AgeUK, among others, talk of how benches help us “feel seen”, and I support the initiative.
Anything to help stop inner-city loneliness is surely a good thing – especially one in the middle of a greened, traffic-calmed area.
