Will there be no end to the tower block madness?

• ON Tuesday September 7 Westminster City Council’s planning committee will again consider the plans for the Paddington Green police station site.

The council officers are recommending approval despite the vast majority of comments objecting, including many local societies.

The scheme is basically three very tall towers of very expensive apartments, the tallest block being 32 floors. The height and density are excessive and completely out of character with this area of Edgware Road.

Of course, what is really needed is truly affordable housing and more open space but between the Conservative council and a government more sympathetic to developers’ profits than local people this option was never likely.

I also read this week that two more enormous towers planned for the city are threatening the 320 year old Bevis Marks synagogue in Aldgate. Is there no end to this tower block madness?

The character of all parts of London will soon be irreversibly changed. And sadly most of these towers are neither architecturally significant nor economically useful.
