Why scrap cars when they could be modified?
Thursday, 27th May 2021
• ON the subject of car ownership, your correspondent, Jon Crowcroft, speaks much sense, but misses a couple of important issues, (Some 69 per cent of people in Camden do not own a car, May 20).
There are very many things that can only be done by car and there are other routes to electric car ownership.
Why scrap or sell a petrol or diesel car? About 90 per cent of it is inoffensive.
Take out the engine and many etceteras and fit an electric motor, batteries and a controller. Alternatively remove the rear wheels and fit two “wheel hub motors” plus the extras mentioned above.
This is a somewhat simplistic account; there are extra matters to be done but it can be done.
What is harder to achieve, thanks to our appalling car insurance industry, is the business of allowing such a vehicle to be shared and run by half a dozen people.
