Why not back the 21 per cent corporate tax rate?

Thursday, 10th June 2021

• WHY did the government oppose president Joe Biden’s global minimum corporate tax rate that would bring billions of pounds back to Britain and stop Oxford Street shops being undercut by Amazon and Google?

Britain is the only G7 country not to back the plan, with Germany, France, Canada, Italy and Japan all backing Biden’s proposal.

Joe Biden’s proposal for a new global minimum corporation tax rate of 21 per cent could raise £14.7billion for Britain every year, more than would be required to fix the NHS funding shortfall.

However, the government wants to water this agreement down to 15 per cent, letting big multi-nationals off £6.8billion. This works out at £131million per week.

Surely it makes sense to support president Biden’s common-sense proposal which would raise billions of pounds for the NHS?

And if the government is serious about wanting Oxford Street to recover, retailers must surely have a level playing field with their online competitors.
