Why Europe matters

• I JUST want to say that Camden Council leader Georgia Gould’s letter (Camden has committed to campaign for remaining in the EU, July 11) was great.

The European Union has always had higher environmental, health and ecological standards than those of British law.

They have funded scientific research British agriculture, as well as given film and arts grants, and much more. Years ago the EU set down rules and increased pay for nurses’ working hours.

And now with president Donald Trump in the White House, will the United Kingdom become a lonely, poor, country and join in singing the anthem of “America First, Hungary First, Austria First”, and so on?

And what Cllr Gould suggests in the letter, that it may be British people left behind with the poorest economy, yes, this must be urgently addressed.

To this end the north will not benefit from the HS2 train, which by the way is devastating Camden in more ways than one, and plunging the country into worse debt.

It will just suck more and more people into London who will demand more and more housing, while further north of London, all the way up to Scotland, they will remain impoverished, lacking in jobs and infrastructure, and transport.
