Where the power should lie with ‘levelling up’

‘It is power as much as resources that need to be levelled up’

• THE £7.7million the government have graciously given out of its “levelling up fund” to help reduce health inequalities in Kentish Town is, of course, welcome, (Levelling up matters, January 26), but it is power as much as resources that need to be levelled up.

The government has quite enough on its plate to take decisions about at the moment. So it might be better engaged doing that rather more effectively, without reaching into distant parts of the realm and deciding on priorities there – cycling in Kentish Town, an Eden project in Morecambe, Lancashire.

Let it properly resource local councils so that they – directly elected and embedded in the community – decide on what is needed. They are more likely to get it right than a bunch of unpopular ministers in Westminster desperate to display their largesse while all around them is a festering mess.
