When considering the ULEZ expansion, consider pollution and the NHS

ULEZ, ultra low emission zone: a healthier option…
• THE letter from my friend Mary Amayo was of interest (Does Sadiq Khan know the cost of a car? February 3), but there are parts of that I’m unable to agree with.
For a start there is more than one reason for people not being to able to visit. Unable to afford fares is one. The ULEZ, ultra low emission zone, scheme may be another.
That some will disagree with was confirmed a stunt staged by an objector at the County Hall. But just what prancing through the hall carrying a glass of water was meant to signify is beyond me.
Surely the idea of adding to conditions suffered by asthmatics and others with like ailments is something the National Health Service does not need with the current problems.
Not taking measures now will see cases multiply in the thousands over the years to come. London has already seen breathing problems leading to the death of at least one child.
As to the matter of the ULEZ scheme being no more than a money-raiser there are are many the Mayor of London could call on, but then consider the present government’s attitude to such as Transport for London’s funding.
I’ve written before to say that if it was serious about this it would be offering TfL the same kind of deal it has offered the rail companies.
At the same time, the contracts under which those companies operate surely warrant serious scrutiny.
As to the mayor Sadiq Khan being a bully, surely a plain definition of bullying lies with what at least one government minister has reportedly been charged with.
So far as is known to me, nothing like the reported 30 charges just noted has ever been levied against this Mayor of London.
