• THE first Duke of Wellington did not say the Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton, (It’s plain to see that the game is rigged, August 24).

He did not enjoy his time at the school, and a cursory glance at the officers who fought at Waterloo would show otherwise; therefore, the duke giving Eton that honour seems beyond unlikely.

Most, if not all, authorities on his life say the same thing – including the seventh duke. The attributed quotation is a misquotation from none other than, ironically, the work of a Frenchman.
