Ian Hislop, Hilary Lowinger and Richard Ingrams 

• SO rare to feel joyful and elevated after reading an obituary, but that of the late Hilary Lowinger of Private Eye magazine fame was disarmingly witty, generous, and suitably vulgar, (John Gulliver: Not so fast Kowalski! August 24).

So different from what Siri Hustvedt in The Sorrows Of An American (2008) lugubriously notes: “the tell-all confession… celebrity, marriages, divorces, addictions, humiliation as entertainment – our version of the public hanging. The crowd gathers to gape.”

What a send-off for Hilary!
