We need the Freedom Pass
Friday, 29th May 2020

The late Illtyd Harrington introduced the Freedom Pass to London in the 1980s
• THE Freedom Pass does, indeed, need to be kept, (‘This must not be beginning of the end for pensioners’ right to their Freedom Pass’, May 21).
It was originally intended to enable retired people to travel free of charge once the morning rush hour was over.
To keep to this concept, two changes are needed.
First, eligibility for the pass needs to be in line with the state retirement age, rather than the current threshold age of 60.
Secondly, those pensioners who remain in full-time paid employment should pay for their ticket if travelling to work before 9.30am, rather than expect other travellers to subsidise their journey.
