SAFE havens are being set up in the West End for women who become scared or are threatened with sexual harassment or violence on nights out.
The council’s new campaign aims to change the mentality of men and provide practical help to women under the banner of “It’s Her City Too”.
Statistics show an 11 per cent increase in sexual offences in Westminster, with 84 per cent of those victims being women.
Businesses have received letters inviting them to become accredited havens that can be a space women can go to get away from any harassment in the street. The idea is that women have a “sanctuary” where they can charge mobile phones or talk to a friendly female face when they might be scared.
Signs will be put up outside participating shops in the hope the concept becomes widely known by those on a night out.
Access to water, telephone, CCTV and lockable doors are required from participating businesses that are facing a challenge to sign up because of public liability insurance.
As part of the promotion, West End men are being encouraged to take responsibility if they see something untoward going on in the street.
There will also be an expansion of the “night stars” volunteers scheme, a “night safety walks” promotion and women’s safety training for business staff.
Westminster’s lead councillor for communities and public protection, Aicha Less, said: “I’ve lived in Westminster all my life and want others to experience the exciting and fun city that I know.
“But as the mother of two daughters who grew up in central London, I understand the anxieties parents have when their children go out.
“We don’t want anyone to feel unsafe or have their night ruined by the pathetic behaviour of certain individuals and are calling for everyone to take responsibility for the behaviour of others.”
