University applications should follow receipt of grades

‘The exam grade shambles could have been prevented’
• YOUR correspondent is correct in the general principle, (My daughter has been let down by her teachers, August 20).
Teachers can be biased against or in favour of a pupil for non-academic reasons.
The exam grade shambles could have been prevented if candidates for university applied for a place after they had taken their exams and received their grades.
The present muddle would not exist if that protocol had been in place. This year that might have meant delaying exams for a few months. But that would have been better than the present mess.
