IT’S a brand-new season, in a brand-new league: but for Camden Town WFC it’s business as usual – especially when it comes to getting amongst the goals.
Town marched into their latest campaign on Sunday brimming with confidence after winning the Premier Division of the Greater London Women’s League and the JGM Trophy last term.
They began life in Division One North of the London & South East Regional League in emphatic style as they thumped Ashford United 5-1 at the Greenbox Stadium in Kent.
Harry Sherman’s side wasted little time stamping their authority on the game, taking the lead inside 11 minutes thanks to Orla Conlan’s thunderous drive.
Jade Steadman soon levelled for the home side with a powerful header, but that was as good as it got for United. The equaliser was met by a quickfire double from the ever-reliable Maxine Borden, who led Camden into the half-time break boasting a 3-1 lead.
“I was very happy to get two goals to help the team with our first win of the new campaign,” said the midfielder.
“It was a really positive first game for us, which we can definitely build on.
“We’re all very excited with the new season, and this first game was the perfect start.”
And indeed it was the perfect start, with Town going on to grab two more goals in a rampant second half showing.
A clever switch of play carved Ashford open, and Gemma Clenshaw was on hand to finish off a flowing move for Camden’s fourth.
The final word of the afternoon belonged to striker Anna Kimberley, who capped a solid performance with a looping header over the goalkeeper five minutes from time.
Describing Sunday’s resounding scoreline as “a statement opening-day victory”, manager Sherman was very clear about Camden Town’s intent this season.
He said: “We wanted to send a message to the league on day one. Yes, we’re the new team in the division, but we want to be considered as title contenders.
“We are not here to make up the numbers; we’re in it to win it and to keep this special journey we’re on going.”
Camden are back on the road this Sunday when they travel to Greenwich Borough for a 2pm kick-off.
Then comes an even bigger away day against fellow title contenders Bromley on Sunday, August 31.
