Richard Ratcliffe on hunger strike

Protest: Richard Ratcliffe with a picture of Nazanin

• I WAS so glad to see your report on Richard Ratcliffe’s latest protest, in his ongoing attempt to get something done by the government to help his innocent wife, held in Iran on repeated false charges and due imminently to be returned to prison yet again, (Nazanin’s husband on hunger strike for the second time, October 28).

Mr Ratcliffe’s quiet dignity has been incredibly striking, as he has continually protested throughout all the years since 2016 when Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was first arrested.

Boris Johnson demonstrated just how much help he was going to be when, as foreign secretary, he wrongly referred to her as a journalist and instead of giving her any help, gave her accusers another weapon to add to their armoury of false accusations.

The attitude of this government has given little hope to any innocent person who might be held hostage in a foreign country, and I wonder whether Mr Ratcliffe should change his tactics.

Has he committed any act of civil disobedience? No. Has he inconvenienced anybody? No. And precious little notice had been taken or news coverage he’s got.

All the news lately has been given over to the “Insulate Britain” protesters who have glued themselves to streets and motorways and held up vehicles, including ambulances, for hours.

Whichever side you’re on, it has to be admitted that their tactics have drawn an enormous amount of attention to their cause.

So I think Mr Ratcliffe should abandon his decency and start doing something that will cause real inconvenience, because it’s horribly apparent that as long as he and his wife and child are the only ones suffering, this government will neither care nor act.
