Distressing language on the BBC…

• THE centenary of the BBC ought to be accompanied by a bit of “autumn cleaning”, notably concerning the bad language that can distress many people, especially listeners to BBC Radio 4, traditionally the most sensible of radio services.

Despite our complaints, toilet humour has over the years surfaced in such programmes as Heresy, I’m Sorry I’ll Read That Again, Loose Ends, The News Quiz and The Unbelievable Truth.

Listen for yourself! It’s either funny or abhorrent depending upon your sensitivity.

Older readers might recall how the late Hollywood actress Loretta Young used to keep a “swear box” on her movie sets.

If anyone spoke foul words within her presence they would be required to put money in the box, later to be donated to some good cause.
