• IN his letter (We need to take advantage of the water we have surrounding us, August 18) MC Newberry made a good point.

An alternative could be to dig a trench alongside that wonderful billions of pounds HS2 scheme, put in a pipeline (Mulholland of LA style) and take all the excess water from the north to the south.

After all, everything else is going south so why not the water? Just a thought.
