MIKEL Arteta has tipped Kieran Tierney to be a future Arsenal captain, describing the defender as a “natural leader”.

Social media was abuzz before kick-off on Saturday as Tierney warmed up in freezing conditions against West Brom wearing just a T-shirt and shorts.

The left-back then shone in the snow at the Hawthorns as he capped a man-of-the-match display by scoring the opener with his weaker right foot, laying on a goal for Alexandre Lacazette and earning a clean sheet.

Tierney has previously captained both Scotland and former club Celtic, and Arteta is confident the 23-year-old can one day lead the Gunners out.

“He’s shy, and he’s so humble as well,” said the Arsenal boss. “He came here and it took him a while, he had a really bad injury and he’s away from home, but he’s a natural leader.

“You see how he behaves on that pitch, and when he talks he says the right thing and it’s exactly what we’re looking for. I’m so pleased to have him in the team.

“He can still improve but at the moment he’s a real threat in attack and he’s been really solid defensively. It’s the type of contribution we need from our full-backs.”

Arteta was also taken aback by Tierney’s attitude towards the cold weather, adding: “He’s got something special in his blood because we’re all wearing snoods, gloves and hats!

“He just goes out in his shorts and a T-shirt! It’s not like he’s acting, believe me. He’s very comfortable like that.

“From the moment I joined this club and he went through this shoulder injury, I saw a player with enormous talent with the perfect attitude and commitment.

“He is a joy to work with and I’m so happy for him with the goal he scored and everything he’s put in to be better every day towards the team and towards the club. He had some issues to adapt and it was a challenge for him, and we are all trying to help him because the kid really deserves it.”

Meanwhile, with the January transfer window now open, there has been no shortage of names linked with a move to the Emirates. One player drumming up a lot of interest is Norwich playmaker Emi Buendia, with the Gunners rumoured to be readying a player-plus-cash offer for the Argentine. The 24-year-old has already scored seven goals in the Championship this term.

Reacting to news of a potential move away from Carrow Road, Buendia said: “I belong to Norwich, I have to do things well for my team.

“Tomorrow we will see, but I never had my head outside the objectives, to work so that my club does well.”
