The social contract in British society has been irretrievably broken
Thursday, 28th October 2021
• I DISAGREE with E Chambers, (It is still OK to be angry, October 21). There has been a social contract in British society but now it has been irretrievably broken.
The state has failed the youth to forge ahead in opportunities by closing youth centres, and by sub-standard education; hence the riots in 2011.
In 2017 the government failed to properly utilise its resources to keep the public safe, hence the Grenfell disaster, the lack of social cohesion, and the breakdown of families and communities.
I am not overstating the fact that its mandatory for citizens to obey the law, yet it doesn’t bestow upon them equal benefits fulfilling the duties under the law.
The British state has failed its citizens in protecting their rights, given that positive rights include providing the sufficient prerequisites for a fair chance to flourish in life.
So the citizen ceases to be obliged by the law.
