• ON Monday I walked through Archer Street and turned into Great Windmill Street in Soho. The exterior stairs and basement door of the Windmill Theatre was open to the elements.

The amount of rubbish and bedding in the basement area was indescribable. Apart from rats and other vermin, the detritus from those who were obviously squatters was piled high.

This stuff is a definite and serious fire risk not only for the squatters but the world-famous Windmill Theatre, and also the many buildings that adjoin it on both sides. If the basement catches fire then the entire complex of neighbouring buildings could also catch fire.
