The HS2 decision is bad for the council
Thursday, 7th November 2024
• THE news that the chancellor is ready to waste another extra £1billion of our money, to bring the HS2 to Euston instead of terminating it at Old Oak Common beggars belief, especially when they know that 30 per cent – 4.3 million – of UK children are still living in poverty.
Throwing good money after bad when there are no guarantees from private investors, tells me that Rachel Reeves is desperate and has lost the plot.
Investors are only interested in grabbing Camden’s land on the cheap to build luxury flats and offices; which is what HS2 was about from the start. They have no interest in the social needs of the community they are investing in.
But for Camden, who have been powerless throughout this HS2 scam, here’s the rub. If the chancellor hadn’t volunteered to stump up the money, then HS2 would have terminated at Old Oak Common and the council could have gained back control of Euston, choosing its investors.
However these future investors will speak directly to the Labour heads, leaving Camden with little say or control on any terms or who these investors will be; and we know that any mention of ecologically sustainable developments or social housing will have them rushing to their yachts or private jets.
