The Marble Arch Mound: ‘Taxpayers hope this is a one-off’

• A SPOKESMAN for Westminster City Council was quoted in the Evening Standard that: “The [Marble Arch] Mound is doing what it was built to do – bring people back to Oxford Street”.

Well, it’s not. It was meant to recover it costs, at least the original £2million quote through tickets sales and merchandise. It was such a disaster that the entrance fee was waived and it continues to be free-entry.

A figure of 200,000 visitors is quoted. In September the council leader quoted 100,000 visitors. Have they brought a friend to show them how shabby it is?

What the spokesman doesn’t notice is the fabulous funfair currently occupying Hyde Park which is the true source of visitor influx, genuine revenue-generating, family entertainment not an over-priced project excused as being a “one-off” and “cult classic”.

Taxpayers hope this is a one-off.
