‘FPTP, first-past-the-post, is an outdated system’

• I WOULD argue with Martin Kennedy when he says a form of proportional representation “might help”, (After an establishment panic attack, they’re blaming Brexit, August 17).

Many campaigners see it as essential if we are to change politics in this country as it would result in better representation in the House of Commons, and the chance of more a more democratic parliament responsive to both the needs and concerns of citizens.

FPTP, first-past-the-post, is an outdated system whereby the winner takes all and results in just two main parties, both fighting each other, both vying for the centre ground, and both with powerful whipping systems sometimes obliging members of parliament to vote with the party even if contrary to their own views. This results in government being essentially in the hands of the few.

We need this to change.
