The carnival clean-up has been a great team effort

• AFTER carnival comes the clean-up!
I would like to say a big “thank-you” to all our Westminster City Council and Veolia staff involved in keeping our streets clean after carnival.
During and after carnival, we deployed 129 cleaning staff and 39 vehicles on both Sunday and Monday nights, with additional cleaning staff being deployed throughout the following days to provide more detailed cleaning.
The clean-up plan broadly involves (in priority order):
— clearing huge volumes of litter and waste from main roads so that they could be reopened to traffic by around 4am to 5am each day;
— tackling immediate health and safety issues such as human fouling, grease and oil, canisters, broken glass etc in public areas;
— detailed cleaning and washing of roads and pavements;
— commencing garden and basement cleaning for residents; and
— deep cleaning and graffiti removal.
Veolia staff cleared away 63.76 tonnes of rubbish from the streets after carnival. That is roughly the same weight as five double-decker buses!
This was a great team effort by our staff and contractors which demonstrates Labour’s continuing commitment to keep Westminster’s streets clean.
