Fare dodgers and the driver!

• I WAS on my local bus the other day and two people refused to pay. Yet the driver just took off with apparent disregard.

I took it upon myself to intervene and asked the driver if it was a free service? I was met with outrageous abuse from the bus driver who stopped in the street and, after getting out of the cab, shouted at me and demanded that I get off.

One of the two fare-evading passengers suggested to the driver that I should be dragged off the bus. I’m a concession holder in my 70s and this was a frightening moment, since I could have been assaulted by the passenger who had the “benefit” of getting a free ride.

I called 999 but there was no guarantee that police would attend and, unbelievably, some other passengers said that I should get off the bus. Strange that they should take the side of the driver.

Since it’s my route I met the same driver the following day, who said, “you are not getting on my bus”. But I stood my ground.
