Tin Pan Alley
• I REALLY enjoyed Dan Carrier’s piece reviewing the new Peter Watts’s book Denmark Street: London’s Street of Sound (October 19).
I first visited Tin Pan Alley in the 1960s when I visited a number of times the offices of the Offshore Radio station Radio City which was operating from an old wartime fort in the Thames estuary around eight miles off Whitstable, Kent.
I met a number of the staff and, of course, the disc jockeys. Radio City certainly helped a number of 1960s acts with their careers.
Walking down Denmark Street it was inevitable at the time you would also bump into a well-known musician of the day, many of whom would be playing locally in Soho.
I still regularly visit the street and have fond memories. Peter Watts’s book will be on my Christmas present list.
