That aged well… Welcome back

Opinion: The ‘champions of Europe’ should try nurturing some of their own homegrown talent

A CORRESPONDENT in last week’s letters page, Riley Campbell of N19, asked where I’ve been, asking among many things if “deep down he wishes Arsenal had signed Richarlison instead of goal shy Gyokeres”.

A letter that aged as well as curdled milk. Viktor Gyokeres immediately scored twice and Spurs were found to be trying to offload Richarlison to Crystal Palace.

That was during their outstanding attempts to sign Eberachi Eze, who *checks notes* has since signed for Arsenal.

It’s strange choice given Riley Campbell tells us that PSG and Tottenham Hotspur are the two best teams in Europe, and when you hear the Spurs supporters singing about knowing what they are, it really does feel like they’ve convinced themselves.

It’s a soothing myth when somebody is being mean about all the players who don’t seem to want to sign for Tottenham this summer.

Our pals down the road still don’t seem to comprehend that the prize for beating Bodo Glimt and the gang last year was to NOT play in the awful tournament they insist was so special to win. Well, you’ve never won it – they say, as they get winners tattoos etched into their calves. We also have never won the Anglo-Italian Cup.

Spurs themselves declared how little it all meant by sacking the victorious manager just a couple of weeks after lifting the trophy.

Right decision, by the way – the Postecoglou loyalists do seem to have gone a little, to use Riley Campbell’s term, AWOL recently.

It is obvious that Thomas Frank will prove a far more credible operator than the 20 or so managers that Daniel Levy seems to have hired and sacked in the lifetime of Max Dowman.

The appearance of the 15-year-old against Leeds United was telling.

Arsenal’s critics will accuse them of spending a lot on player recruitment this summer, but how many clubs have produced a team which includes four exceptional prospects all playing together at the highest level: Ethan Nwaneri, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Bukayo Saka and now Dowman too.

Instead of chasing any winger that moves, maybe the “champions of Europe” should try nurturing some of their own homegrown talent.

Even Eze is one of our own.
