‘The best lamb I’ve ever eaten’ – Kleftiko-a-Go-Go’s delivery

SLOW-COOKED lamb and roast potatoes aren’t your typical takeaway.

They arrived at my door in a neat foil box, inside a cool bag, tied with blue string, a sprig of rosemary and a slip of paper detailing a few simple ingredients.

Kleftiko-a-Go-Go – the name a play on the traditional Greek recipe – do one thing, and they do it exceptionally well: lamb and potatoes delivered to your door, enough to feed four or five hungry adults.

All you have to do is whack the whole thing in the oven for five hours at 160 degrees.

I kept mine in the fridge overnight – you can store it for up to 48 hours – and left it cooking on Sunday morning ahead of my guests arriving at 3pm.

I’m not much of a chef, and will admit I was apprehensive – will it cook all the way through? Will it be overcooked? Will it be enough to feed us all?

It was perfect – the meat was flavoursome, moist, and tore easily off the bone, resting in juices with huge potatoes seasoned with rosemary and oregano, a home-cooked ready-made feast. “Best lamb I’ve ever eaten”, according to my hard-to-please friend.

You are told not to even open the box before putting it in the oven, so it is an exercise in trust, and you have to make your own sides – I went for extra potatoes and a Greek salad – but other than that it’s as low-maintenance a roast dinner as you could imagine.

The concept grew from one WhatsApp message during lockdown, designed to help families who were working and schooling from home in north London with a ready-made meal that also felt like something special.

Now delivering UK-wide, Kleftiko-a-Go-Go is still text to order, which adds to the home-cooked feel of the whole experience – more like a thoughtful neighbour popping over to give you a dish than a delivery driver fulfilling an order through a billion-pound business.
