Street cleaning has fallen off in the borough
Thursday, 28th February 2019
• UNTIL about three years ago Camden’s record of street cleansing was good, at least as good as the neighbouring borough of Westminster.
No more. Since then, the service has deteriorated until most streets are littered most of the time. There is nothing wrong with the quality of the sweeping, when it does occur, but the quantity is insufficient to keep on top of the problem.
Our own street (Tonbridge Street, WC1) used to have three sweeps weekly, now it has one. There are too few bins, and bin bags are regularly torn open by animals and birds, scattering the contents.
All this not only degrades our local environment but it is common knowledge that dirty streets encourage other forms of anti-social behaviour and, since much of the litter is from fast food outlets, the spread of vermin.
Residents may want to discuss the issue with their councillors before the next local government election.
