Stop the latest plan for Theobalds Road

Thursday, 25th November 2021

• I HAVE lived near Russell Square and worked in Southampton Row for 30 years plus.

It is terrible that two cyclist have been killed in accidents near the Southampton Row and Theobalds Road junction and I’m glad that Camden is looking into ways of making the crossing safer.

I have strong reservations about some of the plans currently posted on lamp-posts with a consultation deadline of December 1.

I strongly disagree with the move of “Bus Stop X: Theobalds Road” relocated south of the junction. My clients use that stop and they will be less inclined to come if the stop is moved.

There are no businesses or homes near the new location. There are businesses, shops and homes near the current location.

Closing this stop will affect businesses; not least two large hotels on either side of the stop and access to the British Museum.

Losing local shops will be bad for the people living here. The distance from the stop before to the new location is so much longer and would require pedestrians to use a busy and complicated crossing.

Having bus stops directly opposite the one in the other direction is very useful, for example, when people get on a bus in the wrong direction or when they travel between locations.

I cannot understand why all these changes are done primarily to allow cyclist to do right turns on all approaches, on a road where cars are not allowed to turn right.

All this signals to me is build-up of traffic and opening up to cyclists taking more risks skipping the two-stage turning.

Removing pedestrian guard rails could make people try to cross the road without waiting for the lights to change. Camden Council need to seriously stop this plan.
