‘Passengers are allowed to travel free courtesy of the bus driver who is only too pleased to comply’

• I’M not surprised that Transport for London is running out of cash. The innumerable times that I have witnessed fare dodgers is incredible.

In fact, I have noticed on many occasions that passengers are allowed to travel free courtesy of the bus driver who is apparently only too pleased to comply.

“I’m only going one stop” is the usual excuse for getting a free ride. One stop usually turns into several.

Many times, fare dodging passengers simply just walk by the driver and sit down, all of this procedure is politely ignored by the driver presumably afraid of confrontation.

Although many Underground stations have three or four members of staff hanging around with apparently not much to do, precious little action is taken against fare dodgers who burst through the gates.

What exactly is the purpose of having these staff around, what are they there for? Quite often, later in the evening, gates are open, therefore the opportunity not to pay is endemic.
