Spurs fans: ‘We deserve better’

After latest managerial exit, supporters demand board plan

Antonio Conte left Spurs on Sunday, leaving the club searching for another new manager – former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann may be the frontrunner

SPURS fan group the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust (THST) have called on the club to lay out exactly what they want from the next coach – and how they are going to support the new man.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is embarking on his 13th search for a manager following the departure of Antonio Conte on Sunday. The repeated failures to find a winning formula and the frequent changes in the dugout have led the Trust to issue a stern rebuke.

The supporters group – which meets regularly with club owners – said: “The club’s board must now have a clear strategy for what and who comes next, and it needs to tell this club’s supporters what that plan is. THST has repeatedly called for this, and fans deserve it.”

Spurs have handed first-team duties to Conte’s second in command, Cristian Stellini, and coach Ryan Mason, until the end of the season.

This allows the club to widen the recruitment net – but leaves 10 remaining Premier League games to secure a top-four position with a temporary duo at the helm.

The trust added: “Less than two years ago, at the end of the 2020/21 season in May, chairman Daniel Levy told supporters the club would focus on the recruitment of a head coach, saying they were ‘acutely aware of the need to select someone whose values reflect those of our great club and a return to playing football with the style for which we are known’.

“Many supporters will feel the appointments of Nuno Espirito Santo and then Antonio Conte following Jose Mourinho’s spell do not reflect the promises made above.”

This adds further pressure on the board to get it right this time.

As well as the two leading contenders in Mauricio Pochettino and Julian Nagelsmann, Spurs are said to be keen on speaking to Thomas Frank at Brentford.

Elsewhere, director of football Fabio Paratici is rumoured to have set his sights on Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi, Oliver Glasner, currently managing Frankfurt in the Bundesliga, Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim and Celtic’s Angelos Postecoglou.

However, it is now unclear as to whether Paratici will be allowed to play a part in selecting Tottenham’s next manager after Fifa extended his ban in Italy to worldwide yesterday (Wednesday).

Paratici was given a 30-month ban after his former club Juventus were found guilty of false accounting.

The trust continued: “As another season without silverware comes to an end, we would urge the club board to reassess those priorities before appointing a manager the entire fanbase will get behind, and building a team that can truly challenge for domestic and European honours, respecting the traditions of our football club.”

The frontrunner, Nagelsmann, is currently on gardening leave after being relieved of his duties at Bayern Munich.

He was Tottenham’s chief target after Mourinho left, but was already in the sights of the German champions. It appears a case of Levy convincing him – and the supporters’ trust – that this time, things will be different.
