Creation Records founder Alan McGee
• READING Dan Carrier’s piece on Alan McGee (Alan McGee: ‘I was, and still am, a record geek’, April 2), it was a shame your Westminster and West End paper didn’t reference how the West End and Soho kick-started Alan’s Creation Records.
In 1984 Alan ran a club night in the upstairs “living room” of the then Adams Arms pub on Conway Street, and a Wednesday club night in Gossips basement club on the corner of Meard Street and Dean Street.
It was at these venues that he recorded bands which he compiled to make the first Creation album.
I can still vividly remember Alan running down the stairs to Gossips one night amazed that he’d sold out of the first pressing of the album and astonished that recordings he’s made on his portable Walkman were finding favour.
