Hundreds of teenagers ran amok in the West End following a summertime call-out on social media

• I WRITE further to your report of the recent disturbances in the West End, in which groups of teenagers used social media to arrange what can only be described as an organised attempt to steal and loot from businesses, (Oxford Street arrests, August11).

The Metropolitan Police Service is to be commended for its prompt response which prevented widespread shoplifting taking place and I concur with the home secretary who stated that the social disorder which has plagued many American cities cannot be allowed to take root in London.

Those who would seek to justify thuggery by blaming a lack of amenities for young people are wholly mistaken, as the fact that JD Sports was targeted for robbery would indicate that the perpetrators wished to steal high-value items of sportswear which they could sell.

Again social media companies have displayed a complete lack of responsibility by failing to moderate and promptly delete the messages and videos which were used to co-ordinate this incident.

I suspect that if TikTok was made liable for the costs of policing, it would adopt a far stricter approach; as would the prosecution of the parents and guardians of the children concerned.
