Sir Keir’s is a credit to Labour with his stance on the EU

Friday, 16th February 2018

• I BELIEVE Sir Keir Starmer is a credit to the Labour Party with his stance on the European Union (Second referendum is not on, February 9).

It would indeed be dangerous to ignore the result and ask the same question again and again.

Labour is a party of democracy. However, it chose not to offer a referendum to voters, and lost the 2015 election to the Conservatives, who did offer one, ironically, more than 30 years after standing on a manifesto pledge to withdraw Britain from what was then the European Economic Community.

We had months and years of campaigning, much of it toxic and divisive. The public, for better or for worse, have chosen.

If this were to be reversed in any way, it would reignite UKIP and the likes of Jacob Rees-Mogg. Let them have their cake and eat it.

If future generations wish to rejoin the EU, this will be a possibility. For now, the decision of the majority should be respected and adhered to: actions have consequences.
