President Donald Trump

• THE Tory government is bogged down in the disastrous Brexit project that sucked us all in when it was really no more than an internal party squabble.

This divisive issue has taken up years of our time and energy with no outcome in sight. Now Theresa May has launched yet another issue that will divide our country, inviting president Donald Trump on a three-day state visit in June.

Americans are, of course, very welcome in our country. They were our allies in two world wars and are among our most important trading partners. Many of us have visited the United States. We share with them ideals and much of our culture, even if we disagree on some issues.

But Donald Trump is definitely not someone I would welcome. David Lammy was right when he tweeted: “Deluded, dishonest, xenophobic, narcissistic, Donald Trump is no friend of Britain. He is not fit to hold public office, let alone worthy of our country’s highest honours and a banquet with the Queen. Theresa May is selling out the UK to a serial liar and a cheat.”

I am sure that Trump will be met by demonstrations wherever he goes. I am sure the people of Camden will show their disgust and contempt for a man who is not fit to walk in the shoes of leaders like Barack Obama.

I hope all Camden’s political parties – Labour, Greens, LibDems and Tories – will take the lead in showing our joint opposition to Trump.
