Shop workers may suffer harm from long-term use of face masks

Thursday, 16th July 2020

• I AM dismayed at the introduction of compulsory wearing of masks in shops from the July 24.

I have been paying close attention to the arguments raging on this topic but nowhere have I heard from any of those who will be most affected by this measure, namely shop workers of which I am one.

Donning a mask for 10 minutes while you nip into a shop is one thing but to be forced to wear these uncomfortable and stifling appendages for eight hours each day is quite another matter.

As with many issues during this pandemic, the science is far from settled concerning the efficacy of masks to prevent the transmission of viruses.

Furthermore there appears to be much evidence of the harm which an individual can suffer through their long-term use, that is, the lowering of oxygen levels and heightened levels of carbon dioxide leading to headaches and feelings of malaise.
