Jermaine Dhliwayo against Bulgaria’s Todor Petrov
IT was seconds out for Jermaine “God’s Plan” Dhliwayo on Saturday when the talented lightweight continued to impress in the paid ranks, making it two wins out of two since taking his fight game professional.
The 22-year-old former St Pancras ABC boxer “picked his punches perfectly” as he stopped Bulgaria’s Todor Petrov in the second round of their scheduled four-rounder at the Kemi Areena in Finland, which was part of the Kemin Kivinyrkki Boxing Night Vol. 2 showcase.
The victory adds to the eye-catching pro debut that Dhliwayo made at the O2 Arena last month when he outscored the experienced Engel Gomez.
On that night he shared the plaudits with his uncle, British heavyweight Derek Chisora – the Hampstead warhorse closing the show in style when he outpointed rival Joe Joyce.
This time around all eyes were on Dhliwayo, and his trainer CJ Hussein said the night couldn’t have gone much better. “The great thing is that we didn’t have to wait long to get Jermaine back in the ring again following his professional debut,” said CJ, who runs St Pancras ABC and coached Dhliwayo as an amateur.
“That first fight came with a lot of pressure, and as soon as he won it the plan was always to get Jermaine back in the ring again as quickly as possible. At the moment he’s only doing four, and hopefully soon, six-rounders, so we’d fully expect to get Jermaine a couple more fights before the end of the year.”
CJ added: “He’s taken to the professional side of boxing like a duck to water. Jermaine picked his punches perfectly against Petrov and always looked comfortable. He looks really relaxed and settled in the ring, he’s not rushing his shots. He’s great to watch and has a style that is attracting new supporters who enjoy seeing him box.”
