THE Health Safety Executive and city council have launched investigations after a contractor was crushed to death by a pop-up loo.
The man got trapped beneath the telescopic urinal, which rises up from underground at night, in Cambridge Circus, Soho, on Friday at about 1.15pm.
He died at the scene following “crush injuries”, police said. A second of the toilets, in nearby Villiers Street, has been closed since the fatality outside the Palace Theatre.
London Fire Brigade said the man became trapped below street level “underneath” the urinal.
He was treated by paramedics but was pronounced dead at the scene. About 25 firefighters were in attendance, as well as police, paramedics and air ambulance workers.
A Westminster City Council spokesperson said: “There is an ongoing council investigation to establish the cause of this tragic incident.”
