Sir Keir Starmer

• SIR Keir Starmer is an able fellow and he’s the leader the Labour Party members voted for.

I’m not in the party but I would definitely rather have a Starmer Labour government than the Tories. A Labour leader’s task is to hold together both wings of the party and unite them to win power.

Back in the 1970s referendum campaign a Labour member was moaning that “the trouble with Harold Wilson is that he rides two horses at once”, to which the shrewd rejoinder was: “If he can’t ride two horses at once he shouldn’t be in the bloody circus.”

My only criticism of Sir Keir at the moment is that his bum is firmly placed in one horse’s saddle and he’s looking contemptuously at the other one as if he just wants it to run out of the Big Top.

So my advice to Sir Keir is upgrade your riding skills and with any luck we’ll see you in Downing Street. And frankly that can’t be soon enough.
