Guardian journalist and Camden resident Amelia Gentleman
THANK goodness we have, to a large extent, a free press.
It is because of the press that the scandal engulfing the government over the Windrush generation has been exposed.
And it was Amelia Gentleman, a fellow Camden resident, who first opened fire on the inhumane Home Office more than a month ago in the Guardian with a story about an elderly Jamaican awaiting deportation.
Week after week Amelia Gentleman – daughter of the eminent illustrator David Gentleman – ran exposures on the Home Office. The government ignored them until last week the Daily Mail – said to be Mrs May’s favourite read – joined in.
And as that coincided with the opening of the Commonwealth Conference, Mrs May caved in with a grovelling apology.
But, it all started with Amelia Gentleman!
