• D WARD may be right that Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe is being held as a hostage by Iran over a debt owed by the UK, (Nazanin is a hostage because of a debt and the government should pay up, May 6).

But to say that “it is disgusting Boris Johnson didn’t pay up earlier” ignores the fact that to have done so could have been in breach of sanctions against Iran.

And what about previous Labour PMs and governments that could have repaid it?
