The Mirror’s ad

THE toad of the week award, I’m afraid, goes to the Daily Mirror for its sappy advert on the back of the Labour conference guidebook.

“We liked you before it was trendy”, it announced to Sir Keir Starmer and his gang.
It is perhaps the best illustration of how the press are realising which way the wind is blowing and realised they better find out who is going to be manning the new government which the lopsided poll ratings suggest we will get next year.

The spoonfed WhatsApps from the Tories aren’t going to be much use if Mr Starmer wins a landslide.

Sir Keir Starmer

This is why we have already seen weeks of generous features about Labour’s rising stars in the nationals recently – even though they are all the same ordinary people they were before the Tories went kamikaze with partygate, nonsensical culture war riffs and Liz Truss’s hopeless time as prime minister. The Conservatives have handed power to Labour on a plate but, fine, call it a “trendy” opposition.

Readers will not be surprised there were five-star reviews for Mr Starmer’s speech from the Mirror almost as soon as he came off stage.
