Rishi Sunak

Chancellor Rishi Sunak

• DISHY Rishi Sunak, multi-millionaire husband of a billionaire wife, a man with all the appearance and charm of an oil slick and never knowingly pictured without a freshly unwrapped hoodie (down with the kids, Rishi!) or that “aw shucks, me?” grin, knows all about poverty.

A cultivated man, he’s read Dickens and Orwell. He’s even worked as a waiter, goddammit! (for “pocket money” and for his CV as an aspiring politician: I too have worked menial, proles. I feel your pain).

What he has never done is lived poverty. He was not just born with a silver spoon in his mouth but the whole cutlery drawer.

So what’s it to him and the rest of the gilded sociopaths who “govern” us if hundreds of thousands more are shovelled into near destitution by endless benefit cuts masquerading as increases (3 per cent as inflation reaches 8 per cent this time round), a 2,000 per cent increase in food bank use, unprecedented homelessness, beggars on the streets of one of the richest states on Earth.

For what?

More and more tax cuts for those who don’t need them and the hell with the rest.
