‘Please, NO NO NO!’ to coronation alcohol bid
Applications for off-sales licences spark ‘noise’ objections

Weekend-long Charles III celebrations will take place on May 6 to 8
ANGRY residents are urging city licensing chiefs to pull the plug on the King Charles coronation celebrations.
Objections have been made after the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) submitted two applications to the council to allow “off-sales” of alcohol from “new premises” in Hyde Park Corner, Horse Guards Parade and the Mall from May 6 to 8.
The application “in support of the coronation” includes details of plans for the weekend-long festival, Charles III celebrations billed as “bringing communities together”.
Jumbo screens in Hyde Park will broadcast an evening concert in Windsor Castle with a 50,000 capacity crowd expected to be drawn.
But critics have warned the Royal Parks are too often hired out for noisy events like Winter Wonderland or summertime music festivals.
“Please, NO NO NO!”, one parent said in an official objection. “There is far too much noise in this area already. Let us families enjoy the park and feel comfortable taking our kids to the park to skate, walk and enjoy the wildlife. This is far too intrusive. There are other venues available for this kind of activity. Please direct the applicants to other enclosed venues.”
Another Westminster resident said they “strongly objected”, adding: “Events of this nature in the area being applied for disturb the peace of the neighbours especially at the weekends. This is noise pollution in the park. Just give us some peace and quiet in the spring and autumn. C’mon Westminster Council…”
The objections also said noise pollution in the park would affect wildlife negatively. One noted: “Those wishing to run these activities should do it in an enclosed space designated specifically for this purpose”.
In October Buckingham Palace announced plans for a ceremony to be held on the morning of May 6, eight months after the death of Elizabeth II.
The coronation is scheduled for May 6 with military processions to and from Westminster Abbey “ending with a balcony appearance at Buckingham Palace”.
The application calls for alcohol licences in venues in an area bounded in the south west corner of Hyde Park, along South Carriage Drive, along West Carriage Drive and also from Hyde Park Lodge at Hyde Park Corner, from 10am to 6pm Saturday, 4pm to 10pm on Sunday.
Alcohol will be sold in “polycarbonate or crushable vessels”, according to the DCMS, which has also applied for various licences to sell refreshments and bacon sandwiches in Green Park for Friday night until Saturday morning. This is for flag-waving crowds who are expected to camp overnight to get the perfect spot.
Regarding off-sales of alcohol, the application said “it will not be possible to ensure that anyone attending the site leaves the area without taking alcoholic drinks bought on site away with them”.
It added: “We wrote to nearly 969 addresses within Westminster to share with them the plans to celebrate the coronation.”
Westminster city councillors on the licensing committee will make a decision on April 13.
