Obesity epidemic…

Friday, 7th March

• “IT wasn’t my fault: Eve tempted me. She should have known I can resist everything except temptation.” (Obesity profits, February 28).

The concept of free will is expressed in everyday terms in the doctrine that if one is of sane mind, one is responsible for one’s actions.

There is always another choice, whether not eating the apple or the calorific temptations dreamed up by “food multinationals”, as your correspondent puts it.

As manufacturers are now required to list the calorie content of all packaged foods, a little basic arithmetic should enable those drawn to excess to set a calorie “budget”, perhaps reducing fried foods or puddings or sweets to once a week.

Not eating smelly high calorie foods on public transport may be a good start. If a product does not sell, retailers will withdraw it.
