Queen behaved decently with her sense of vocation, and brought unity / stability by upholding tradition, establishing national community / national identity, royalty as the “embodiment of the nation”, a political institution to do “the least harm”, a mysterious mystique, magical, even a secular religion, inheritor of an “endless past”, offering style / space, yet recognisably “human”, above the egotistical abrasiveness of quotidian politics, so we can all feel “kinship and community”, as it is morally exemplary with august ceremony intelligible to us ordinary folk.

We are happy living in the 19th century. Obsequious, toadying, fawning sycophants. That’s the media, not the masses.
