No decision has been made to close libraries in Westminster
Friday, 18th February 2022
• THE suggestion that any decision has been taken to close any library to save money is simply wrong, (Cuts may see axe fall on historic libraries, February 11).
While an internal report for officers has made comments on library buildings in relation to accessibility, carbon emissions and our ambition to work smarter, no recommendations or suggestions have been put to councillors for any decisions.
Westminster City Council invests more money in its libraries per resident than any other council in the country and we understand they are highly valued by residents.
That’s why we are building two new library facilities in the north of Westminster, at Seymour Leisure Centre and Church Street, and have planned a refurbishment of Paddington library too.
The decision has been taken to extend the lease on Mayfair library under the current terms while a longer-term agreement is negotiated.
The library serves a large geographic area and is not under threat of closure. Our libraries are the best service in the country and we will invest to ensure they stay that way well in to the future.
