DISABILITY campaigners delivered a petition to Downing Street warning of the dangers of “floating” bus stops.

Adam Gabsi said the bus stops’ design – that are flanked by the pavement and the road – make it much harder for him to take public transport.

The 38-year-old said: “If you are on the pavement you have to cross via a zebra crossing over a cycle lane to the island and board from there.

“There’s very limited space for a run-up and, as someone in a motorised wheelchair, you need a slight run-up, especially if bus drivers don’t lower the bus and the ramps are steep, and that comes down to bus driver training,” said Mr Gabsi, who is the vice-chair of charity Inclusion London which campaigns for equality for deaf and disabled people.

Mr Gabsi said for those with a visual impairment crossing a cycle lane can be daunting as sometimes cyclists do not stop for pedestrians.

He said: “I’m not attacking cyclists, my girlfriend is a cyclist and we all want clean air, but their safety should not come at the expense of disabled people.”
