News from a floating voter…

Thursday, 21st April 2022

• MY light-hearted missive from a wayward canal-boater which got past Eric Gordon’s eagle editorial eye (My life as a floating voter, January 10, 2020) was well-received in the alternative universe that exists in these parts.

So much has changed since then, but I remain a floating voter; this week in Paddington Basin, but who knows where next week?

I decided to register my vote somewhere useful when I found that, for electoral purposes, a canal boat has the same status as a park bench and I am dealt with as “homeless”.

I am currently moored in the City of Westminster borough and specifically in the Hyde Park ward.

Conniving with other floating voters, it was expedient to make my address at a steel ring outside the Underground only yards from that blue bear that likes marmalade.

I wanted a nice place to be “homeless” and I needed an address for my homelessness. Paddington Basin W21LA you’re it.

Over the next while I’ll confirm whether my vote is registered and discover where my polling station is and, of course, who the candidates are.

A nice thing about being a floating voter of Hyde Park is that the hacks do not even know you exist. Continuous cruising boaters are under the radar. We are scattered at least every 14 days to the four corners of the canal network.

If deemed appropriate (by Eric, your former editor’s ghost) I’ll let you know how it goes as a floater.
